League form deserts Sawbridgeworth
Sawbridgeworth Tn 0, Barkingside 4
Essex Senior League Cup, group D
THE Robins’ strong league form deserted them as they slipped to a heavy defeat at the hands of Barkingside in an Essex League Cup group match on Saturday.
Barkingside were simply too good for Sawbridgeworth.
After Dan Hudson fired a shot straight at visitors’ keeper Jason Roberts on 10 minutes, play quickly switched to the other end where Barkingside forced four corners in quick succession.
From the last of these, Harry Sintim headed ex-Stansted striker Sean Thomas’s shot off the line and Bradley Ross blasted narrowly wide.
Barkingside went ahead on 35 minutes. A bad bounce led to Sintim handling in the area and Jordan Tolan scored from the penalty spot.
Immediately after the goal, Thomas shot just wide of a Sawbridgeworth post and Stuart Zanone brought a good save from Roberts at the other end.
Barkingside doubled their lead on 53 minutes when Alex Carter headed home from a corner before Ryan Imbert made it 3-0 when he nodded home from a free-kick.
It was all Barkingside now.
Thomas threatened several times but it was Imbert who completed the scoring in the 79th minute with a close-range shot.
Peter Wickham, the Sawbo boss, said: “We were not at the races. They were a yard quicker than us all over the park and deserved to win.”
