Jason McNally is new Harlow Cricket Club captain

ALL-ROUNDER Jason McNally has been appointed Harlow Cricket Club’s first team skipper.

CricketThe 23-year-old has replaced James Butler.

Former Essex bowler Andrew McGarry (28) has also joined the Shepherd Neame Essex League division two club.

McGarry will help coach the Marigolds’ club’s junior section.

All-rounder Ahmed Khwaja has also joined from division three club Old Brentwoods.

McNally joined Harlow last year and made telling contributions with the bat in the middle order and the
ball.

McGarry’s pace and accuracy will give Harlow’s bowling attack penetration while Khwaja is a gifted batsman who scored more than 1,000 runs for Old Brentwoods last year. He can also bowl spin.

McNally has high hopes. He said: “I will be disappointed if we do not get promotion this time.

“I will be looking to use Andrew McGarry in the middle of the innings when he can keep things tight and drop it on a sixpence.

“He will bring a lot to our team and will also be the quickest bowler in the league. I have either myself, Luke Monger or Luke Heskett to open the bowling.”

He added: “Khwaja scored 1,100 runs including five centuries [in 2009] and if you score that number of runs you can do well at a higher level. If he gets 25 per cent less than that for us, that will be good.”

McNally is also looking for more from the club’s existing players.

He said: “It gives competition for places and I will be looking for Rehman Ahmed and Nick Butler to score centuries this year.

“We got bowled out too often last year for low scores. I will also be looking to play a colt each week in the first team and this will help the club in the long term.”

Commenting on his decision to step down as captain after three years, Butler said: “I had taken the club as far as I thought I was able to. So, I discussed the 2010 season with Jason and it was clear he was the man to take the club forward.

“He has lots of fresh ideas as well as experience of playing and coaching at a very good standard.”
