AN environmental charity recycling clean, usable waste into practical resources for local community groups and schools has opened up an outlet in Harlow.
The Phoenix Resource Centre collects 20 tonnes a week of surplus stock, offcuts and discarded goods such as wood, fabric and unwanted gifts to be used for educational and fundraising purposes.
By paying an annual fee of £10, members, who can include nurseries, childminders, youth organisations, schools, playgroups, care homes, charities, art and theatre groups, can purchase tokens to visit and collect materials for their lessons, social or charity events.
Following its success since launching two years ago, the group have expanded its operation to the top floor of the Harvey Centre car park after the shopping centre agreed to supply them with 30,000 sq ft of retail space.
Harlow MP Robert Halfon, who officially opened the new centre, called the group’s work "inspirational".
"Phoenix Resource Centre is an inspirational place and possibly one of the best examples of the Big Society in action," he said.
"They stop thousands of products from going to landfill and instead ensure that they are recycled and given back to the community.
"I suggest that there is nothing like this going on elsewhere in the country and I will be doing all I can to support it."
Centre Manager Bryan Young added: "We’re very proud of our involvement with our local community. The Phoenix Resource Centre offer a fantastic and innovative service to schools and community groups at this difficult economic environment and I’m delighted that we could help."
