Teresa Keene (47), of Upper Park, works at Princess Alexandra Hospital and is one of 10 finalists in the running for for an Infacol Baby Bonding Award.

She was nominated by mum Emma Knewstub for going above and beyond the call of duty during the birth of her first son Sid in August 2008.

“Teresa dropped her Friday night plans and came to help deliver my baby when I unexpectedly went into labour,” said Emma (32), of Bury Road, Old Harlow.

“Having planned a water birth, I was devastated when they told me I would have to go into surgery.

“My ordeal didn’t stop there because my son was born with the umbilical cord around his neck and I thought that he wouldn’t survive.

“Thanks to Teresa, who was with me through my whole labour, I was put at ease. I couldn’t have done it without her; her care didn’t stop after birth and she organised her rota so she could take care of me until I was discharged.”

Since the birth Teresa and Emma have stayed in touch via the social networking website Facebook.

Emma added that the positive experience had given her the confidence to have a second child. Baby Wilfred is now five months old.

Teresa, who only found out about the nomination last week, said: “It was very pleasant and surprising to find out Emma had nominated me.
“It’s nice to be thanked for something that I like to think I would do for absolutely anybody in my care.”

The awards aims to recognise health care professionals who help forge the emotional bond between parent and baby. More than 150 health professionals across the country were nominated for the award.

The winner will be announced next month and will be receive a bursary towards further training.
