AS the clocks chimed to mark the hour, silence descended.

In quiet contemplation, the thoughts of the hundreds of people who had gathered at the Netteswell Cross war memorial turned to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

More than 500 attended Sunday’s Remembrance Day service at the memorial in School Lane to remember the fallen.

Joining members of the public were Harlow MP Robert Halfon, representatives of Harlow Council, war veterans, serving officers and youngsters from the town’s various youth and service organisations.

A military parade and marching band started proceedings before Rev Albert Watson led the service in the memorial garden at Harlow Town Park.

Among those laying poppy wreaths at the base of war memorial were Mr Halfon and council chairman Mike Garnett.

Mr Halfon said afterwards: "Of all the Remembrance Sunday services I have attended in Harlow over the past 10 years I think this was the most moving.

"To see so many of the town’s residents turn out to pay their respects made it very special and shows how it can bring our community together to remember courage and sacrifice and remind us how tradition is an important anchor between the generations."

Councillor Garnett added: "The Remembrance day ceremony at the War Memoral in the Town Park was extremely well attended by both the young and old of Harlow.

"The service was a fitting way for us to remember those who fought for our freedom in two World Wars and the more recent conflicts.

"We especially think of those who have given their lives for their country; we will always remember them."
