Harlow named as one of UK's flagship Enterprise Zones

By Chris Moss

HUNDREDS of new jobs could be on the horizon after the Government today (Wednesday August 17) confirmed that Harlow had been picked to become one of the UK’s flagship Enterprise Zones.

This morning’s announcement by Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Eric Pickles opens the door for the creation of a sprawling 126-acre ‘silicon valley’ in the heart of the town’s industrial area.

Firms will be encouraged to set up within the zone, which will incorporate a 57-acre mixed-use site off London Road and a 69-acre industrial area covering the north-eastern corner of Templefields, by the promise of subsidised business rates, super-fast broadband and relaxed planning regulations.

The town’s successful bid was put together by Harlow Council, Essex County Council and the West Essex Alliance – a private sector-led group set up to promote economic growth across the region – with support from Harlow MP Rob Halfon, who told the Star the scheme would "kickstart the local economy".

“This is a vote of confidence in Harlow - it is good for jobs, and good for our town,” he said.

“I have worked for over a year with local firms, Harlow Council, and residents to make sure that Harlow is at the front of the queue to become one of the new Enterprise Zones, and I am delighted that the bid has been successful.

“It just goes to show that a strong campaign in Parliament and locally can make all the difference. In fact, this is all the more special because there will only be a limited number in the country.

“Our town has an excellent reputation for industry. In fact, we are one of the most entrepreneurial towns in England, as our rate of new start-up businesses is well above average.”
