UNEMPLOYED residents in serious financial difficulty will soon be able to pick up food vouchers from Harlow Job Centre after a campaign launched by Harlow MP Robert Halfon won Government support.
Under current legislation, staff are not allowed to hand out Harlow Foodbank vouchers - which provide up to three days’ worth of food – to those finding themselves in sudden financial difficulty.
But following a long-running campaign by Mr Halfon, Employment Minister Chris Grayling has backed the MP’s cause - and asked JobCentre Plus to work with a charitable trust on a pilot scheme which could see the initiative introduced nationwide.
Mr Halfon said: "This is great news and now so many more people are set to benefit from Harlow Foodbank’s great work.
"The current legislation brought in by the previous government penalises families and has hit the poorest families in Harlow the hardest, especially those whose benefits or incomes are delayed through no fault of their own."
