'FA board should resign' - Robert Halfon

By Jean Marsden

HARLOW Tory MP Robert Halfon has called for the board of the Football Association (FA) to resign following England’s dismal display in the World Cup.

Mr Halfon, who is a Chelsea supporter, said the last three England managers - Sven-Goran Eriksson, Steve McClaren and Fabio Capello - "have all produced nothing but failure".

In a Parliamentary motion, he said: "All [the three managers] have been given hugely expensive contracts with little result."

He also called on the House to note that "amazingly" Capello's contract was renewed just a few weeks ago, meaning the FA will have to pay out more money "if, as expected, he is sacked".

Mr Halfon’s motion added that he believed there was no reason for the England football team to fail in this way.

And he believes "for years, England has punched well below its weight because of the ineffective management of the Football Association".

Demanding a "footballing revolution at FA headquarters" with fans having greater input into decision-making, Mr Halfon said: "We have great players, playing for some of the best clubs in the world. Yet, for too long, the FA Board has made the wrong decisions and judgements at crucial times. There have also been too many shenanigans at FA headquarters."

“For years, England has punched well below its weight and this World Cup was an unmitigated disaster, with just one 1-0 victory, against Slovenia.

“The FA Board has failed the England national team. The buck stops with them. It is time for them to go."
