SHOPPERS were given a taste of what can be cooked up using leftover food when a celebrity chef set up stall in the Water Gardens on Friday.

As part of Essex County Council’s ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ campaign, chef Richard Fox demonstrated how simple it is to create delicious dishes from leftover food.

The roadshow, which is on a countywide tour, aims to raise awareness about reducing the 7.2 million tonnes of food wasted in the UK every year.

"The roadshow has gone really well," Richard told the Star. "People have been really interested and most importantly are going away inspired.

"Our aim is to show people ways of making food last longer whilst demonstrating the principle of recipe-free cooking where you just take all the food you have leftover in your fridge and cupboards and bring it together to create something delicious."

He added: "At a time when saving money is so important, I think our message is really being taken on board."

Richard's new book - How To Be An Everyday Kitchen Magician - is out on April 26, published by Green Books.
