YOUNGSTERS alarmed by the recent spike in youth unemployment can take advantage of expert advice on entering the world of work when Harlow College plays host to Essex’s first-ever apprenticeship fair next week.
The unique event - which takes place on Monday afternoon inside the Velizy Avenue college’s new University Centre Harlow building - will give would-be apprentices the chance to seek information and guidance from employers representing a diverse range of industries.
The college has recently helped set up apprenticeships with Harlow MP Rob Halfon and freelance education journalist Janet Murray, and deputy principal Sue Young told the Star she hoped the event would help pave the way for more youngsters to pursue their dream careers.
"There are lots of myths about apprenticeships, from smaller companies thinking they’re unable to afford them, to young people not fully understanding them and thinking they’re only offered in certain jobs" she said.
"We work hard at fitting the apprenticeship to the employer and the individual - good examples of this are the apprenticeships that we have set up with Rob Halfon MP and freelance journalist Janet Murray."By working with local employers, we want to unlock the untapped talent and potential in Harlow and further afield."Mr Halfon, who last year became the first MP to appoint a paid apprentice and is set to take on another later this month, added: "Harlow College is not only one of the top UK Colleges in England, but has also led the way in apprenticeships across the board.
"This apprentice fair organised by the college helps cement Harlow's strong support for apprenticeships and the opportunities they bring."
Monday’s fair is free to attend and runs from 4pm until 7pm on Monday. For more information on special workshops running on the day, contact Harlow College on (01279) 868100.
